What Is Botox?

Botox is a neuromodulator that changes the way that muscles contract. It is derived from neurotoxins that are produced by c. botulinum, a toxic bacteria. The purified form of botulinum toxin A is safe and effective for controlling muscle contractions when used in tiny amounts injected into the targeted muscles. The neuromodulator effects block nerve signals to the muscles, relaxing the contractions.

Botox was first FDA-approved for treatment of eye muscle spasms back in the late 1980s. Since then, it has been approved for many different treatments, including cosmetic procedures. The effects of Botox take at least a few days to be noticeable, and the proteins in Botox are naturally broken down into amino acids over 3-4 months. The muscle relaxation effects are usually gone by the end of four months. Botox injections are used for the following treatments beyond reducing lines and wrinkles at our clinic:

Most Botox injections can be completed in about 15-20 minutes. Depending on the treatment, multiple injections may be needed to target the desired muscles. Repeated treatments may be needed to maintain the desired effects, whether it is for relieving migraines, jaw pain or controlling hyperhidrosis.

There are very few negative side effects to Botox injections, most related to the injections themselves. Bruising, swelling or tenderness at the injection site is possible, along with some other rare side effects. Millions of Botox treatments are given each year in the U.S. with amazing results.
